Frequently asked questions when hiring a campervan or RV in Miami

What is the difference between a campervan, motorhome and RV?

Your home on wheels can be known by the term campervan, motorhome, RV (recreational vehicle) or a 4 wheel drive camper when describing the vehicle. Whilst there are exceptions, a set of rule-of-thumb definitions could include:

Campervans – Typically the compact van style of vehicle, campervans come in many different shapes and sizes which includes mini vans that have been configured into a campervan. Campervans can accommodate 2 adults comfortably, 2 adults + 1 child or up to 4 adults in some Hi-Top models.

Motorhomes – Motorhome models are designed and configured to be spacious and offer the many comforts of home. Motorhomes will have a long-wheel base allowing the vehicle to be larger in size, giving you more room inside the vehicle, having walk-through access from the driver’s cabin into the main cabin area and the higher roof allows a plenty of head room.

Recreational Vehicles (RVs) – RV is a popular term used in North American to describe motorised vehicles used for camping and touring. Larger in size, a RV is your home on wheels with large living quarters and all of the mod-cons of home. Capable of towing a trailer or car behind it, a RV is suitable for the whole family and can accommodate up to 7 travellers. RV can be used to refer to campervans, motorhomes or 4WD campers.

4WD Campers – 4 wheel drive campervans are generally a 4WD diesel engine. Designed and built for the adventurous traveller, 4WD campers have the ability to take you offroad.

Which campervan providers are available in Miami?

Cruise America and El Monte are located around Miami. The Cruise America depot is 24 miles from Miami International airport at 23501 S Dixie Hwy, Princeton, FL. El Monte is located in Princeton at 13700 South West 248th Street around 25 miles south of Miami International Airport.

Are there any travel restrictions when renting a RV or motorhome in the US from North America?

There are varying travel restrictions imposed where vehicles cannot be taken. Breaching these restrictions voids insurance cover and may incur additional costs. These do differ between suppliers so check when collecting your vehicle. Travel is restricted in:

  • Death Valley - The name says it all - due to extreme summer temperatures of up to 60C, travel is not permitted between May and September
  • New York City & Manhattan - No travel
  • Quebec, Montreal and Ottawa - risk of motorhome theft means vehicles are not to be parked within city limits
  • Alaska & North Canadian Provinces - Some restrictions, El Monte permits use but at hirer's risk - limited cover
  • Mexico - some suppliers have blanket bans whilst others (El Monte) allow at hirer's risk with purchase of Mexico Auto Liability Insurance. No cover for repairs, loss of use - limited cover
  • Off-road - No travel on unsealed, gravel or logging roads & tracks
  • Drive Through and Parking structures - due to risk of overhead damage vehicles cannot be taken through Drive-thrus or within parking buildings

What type of driving license do I require to drive a campervan or RV in Florida?

All drivers are required to hold a current, full, unrestricted driver’s licence valid for the entire period for which the vehicle is rented. If your drivers license is not in English, you will need an accredited English translation or an International Driver Permit in addition to your current license.

Please note a Digital Driver's Licence is not accepted. Probationary or restricted licences are not accepted.

How old do you need to be to hire a campervan or RV in Miami?

All of our campervan providers are 21 years of age with a current full and unrestricted licence when travelling with Cruise America and El Monte.

Can I collect my campervan or motorhome as soon as I fly into Miami?

If you arrive off on an international or trans-continental flight directly into the US or via a US hub, for safety and fatigue reasons, it is strongly recommended that you do not pick up the same day and you overnight in a hotel before collecting your vehicle.

Campervan companies will not be responsible for accommodating late arrivals due to flight delays, or delays with clearing Customs, passport control or luggage claim.

How long does it take to collect my RV rental from the branch in Miami?

Allow at least a minimum of 1 hour for collection of your vehicle, during peak times this may be longer. The check-in process will involve reading and signing the rental agreement. You may be required to watch the campervan introductory instructional video and then a vehicle walk-around demonstration where a staff member will show you the features, appliances, power outlets and how everything works.

There are priority pick-up options which allow for early morning pick-up. You should contact your rental provider generally between 8.30am and 10am on the day of pick-up to schedule a collection time.

Do the RVs rented out of Miami come with bedding and kitchen and living equipment?

No. Your base rental price only covers the cost of the vehicle rental. You can either bring your own bedding, kitchen and living equipment, or hire these from the supplier at additional cost. There are booking ‘bundled’ options available where mileage packs, bedding, kitchen and living equipment are included. Mileage packs are the most important add-on to include to avoid costly per mile charges.

Can I return an RV rental picked up in Miami to a depot in another state?

Yes, one-way RV rentals are a common practice. These are limited to locations where your chosen Miami RV rental provider has a depot or a drop-off ‘meet and greet’ service. Our search results show you pick up and drop off locations for your specific journey, and the published rental cost will include any one-way fees.

Are you allowed to smoke inside the vehicle?

No. All vehicles are smoke free with high cleaning charges applicable.

Do I need travel & medical insurance when travelling in a RV?

Yes. Anyone travelling to the US needs to consider travel insurance particularly comprehensive medical insurance. The quality of medical treatment is world leading - so is the cost - it is astronomical and insurance cover is essential.

Can I leave my car parked at the campervan rental branch?

No. Campervan rental providers don't offer car parking for their customers but can advise of parking facilities close to their branch locations.

Travel Tips of Renting an RV in Miami

Miami, with its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural scene, is a prime destination for travelers seeking adventure and relaxation. One of the best ways to explore this diverse city and its surrounding areas is by renting an RV. Whether you're planning a road trip along Florida's coast or a camping adventure in the Everglades, renting an RV in Miami offers flexibility and comfort. In this guide, we'll share some steps to make your RV rental experience in Miami a breeze with a collection of recommendations from past travellers and the USA RV Rentals research team on road adventures in Florida.

Determine Your Itinerary - This one sound obvious - Before you book an RV, have a clear idea of your travel itinerary. Miami and Florida offers a huge range of attractions, including South Beach, the Art Deco Historic District, Little Havana, and the Everglades National Park. Knowing your destinations and planned stops will help you choose the right RV size and type.

Set a Budget - Renting an RV involves various costs, including the rental fee, insurance, fuel, and campsite fees. Set a budget that includes all these expenses to avoid unexpected surprises. Keep in mind that larger and more luxurious RVs often come with higher rental fees and operational costs.

Understand Insurance Options - Insurance is a crucial aspect of RV rental. Most rental companies offer insurance packages that can provide coverage for accidents, damages, and liabilities. Carefully review the insurance options and choose the one that best suits your needs and budget.

Plan Your Campsites - Miami offers a variety of campgrounds and RV parks. Depending on your preferences, you can choose from beachfront locations, state parks, or more remote spots in the Everglades. Make reservations at your chosen campgrounds in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure your spot.

Pack Thoughtfully - Pack all the essentials for your trip; if you're not planning on purchasing optional packages include bedding, kitchen supplies, outdoor gear and personal items. Make a checklist to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable journey.

Drive Safely - Driving an RV can be different from driving a regular car, so take your time getting used to the vehicle's size and handling. Follow speed limits, adhere to traffic rules, and plan your routes in advance. Keep a safe following distance and avoid sudden lane changes.

Enjoy Your Adventure - Finally, remember that renting an RV in Miami is not just a mode of transportation but a way to experience the city, its surroundings and the state of Florida in a unique and memorable way.
